How Poetry Can Support Real Wellbeing

How Poetry Can Support Real Wellbeing
How Poetry and Spoken Word Support Real Wellbeing

At Community ArtReach, we’ve seen first-hand how poetry and spoken word can create real change in people’s lives. For more than a decade, we’ve run workshops and community events where people of all backgrounds come together to write, share, and listen. It’s not about being the next Banjo Paterson or writing something for a textbook—it’s about expressing what’s real for you, in your own words.

Why does poetry help?

Poetry and spoken word give people a way to say what’s on their mind, even if it’s hard to talk about in everyday conversation. Research shows that creative writing can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost self-esteem. When you put your feelings into words—whether it’s joy, grief, confusion, or hope—you’re giving yourself space to process and understand what’s going on inside.

Real experiences, real benefits

In our workshops, we’ve watched people who were nervous to speak in front of others find their voice and share their story. We’ve seen young adults, parents, and community members discover that they’re not alone in what they’re feeling. Sometimes, just writing a poem about a tough day can lighten the load. Other times, sharing your words out loud helps you feel truly seen and heard.

It’s not about perfection

One thing we always say: there’s no right or wrong way to write a poem. You don’t need to rhyme, use fancy words, or follow any rules. What matters is being honest and open. Our sessions are about creating a safe space, where you can try something new and know you’ll be supported.

The science backs it up

Australian mental health organisations, note that creative activities—including writing—can be a valuable part of looking after your wellbeing. Studies have found that writing about your thoughts and feelings can help manage anxiety and depression, and even improve your immune system.

A community that cares
At Community ArtReach, we believe everyone has a story worth sharing. Whether you’re new to writing or have been scribbling in notebooks for years, you’re welcome here. Our facilitators have lived experience and professional backgrounds in mental health, so you’ll always be met with understanding and respect.
